Elvira Öberg’s radical decision to win a World Cup medal – will now imitate her sister Hanna Öberg: “It is important to…”

Pizza, biscuits and sweets. That was Hanna Öberg’s recipe for success in the WC three years ago.
The same recipe will now be tested by little sister Elvira Öberg before the distance race in Nove Mesto.
– I’ll see how much candy I manage to get in before the distance, she says.

After three races in five days in the WC felt Elvira Öberg that the energy has run out. Actually, it started already after the mixed relay on the first day, when Sweden took bronze.
– It was a huge discharge and has cost a lot. I haven’t been able to recover from that, she says.

The 24-year-old finished ninth in the sprint race and eighth in Sunday’s pursuit start. With decent shooting, but not nearly as good skiing as she usually has.

Elvira’s decision

Afterwards, she concluded that it had become too big sister Hanna Öberg 2021 in Pokljuka, when she went all out in the opening mixed relay and failed in the subsequent races – until she and the national team management realized that it was probably a matter of lack of energy.
– That’s the only thing I can think of, if I don’t wake up sick tomorrow, that it’s something like that, says Elvira Öberg.
– Hanna came back and won a medal (silver) in the distance afterwards. It’s just to be inspired by it. Hanna ate pizza, sweets and biscuits. I’ll see how much candy I can get before the distance.
– Elvira Öberg has been in contact with the nutrition physiologist Linda Bakkman to draw up a plan for what she will put in until the distance race, says the national team coach John Luke.

Hanna Öberg says that she now knows how important it is to recover and replenish energy after the races. The World Cup races in Nove Mesto are also a little extra tough considering the wet and heavy snow and the fact that you now ride on fluoride-free dirt, which means that the skis get progressively worse during the race.
– It takes a little more energy than you might be used to. It is important to pay attention to how much you fill up after the races. I will encourage Elvira to eat more.

Just like Hanna

She says she learned an awful lot after the energy shortage in Pokljuka 2021.
– It’s something I really carry with me and I really believe that the experience has paid off many times after that.

The 28-year-old starts in Tuesday’s distance race in the west, which shows that she won the distance race in the last WC.
– It will be awesome to start it as reigning champion. I have said that I will get better and better during the WC. It is starting to be time to replace the Marseljässen now.

France won the mixed relay and has since taken five medals in two individual women’s races with Julia Simon as victors in both.
