Elon Musk’s super application project could soon include electronic messaging! Called Xmail, it aims to be simpler, more practical and more modern than traditional email services like Gmail.

Elon Musk seems well on his way to conquering the world, or at least the Internet! After having bought – some would say destroyed – the social network Twitter to transform it into X and launched its chatbot Grok – with all the controversies that go with it – the billionaire is now tackling email. As he announced on his social network – his preferred means of communication – he is currently working on Xmail, an alternative that he presents as more simplified, refined and modern than traditional electronic messaging. Its objective is to go to the essentials – sending and receiving emails – without superfluous functions. Gmail and Outlook had better watch out!

Xmail: a modern and simplified platform

Elon Musk said it on X: “We need to completely rethink how we do emails.”. Exit superfluous functions, the inbox will be minimalist and modern. The billionaire will pay particular attention to sending large attachments, a point often criticized on Gmail or Outlook. This function could be of interest to users who need more flexibility for their professional or personal exchanges.

This new platform is part of a series of initiatives launched by Elon Musk to transform “app to do everything”. Indeed, the business leader has already expressed on several occasions his desire to develop a “universal super application”, a bit like what WeChat offers, a Chinese multifunctional instant messaging system which has almost exclusivity on the mobile phone market. country (see our article).

This has all the classic functions – adding contacts, starting new chats, creating groups, starting audio and video calls, sending text and voice messages, etc. – but also serves as a social network – you can publish kinds of messages (threads) and follow official pages. Users can also get in touch with people around them via geolocation, and everyone has a virtual wallet that can be credited to make purchases on the marketplace or in store, but also to book a taxi , or even book a doctor’s appointment, buy insurance and order food.

Xmail would therefore be a new piece in this giant puzzle. Elon Musk also plans to tackle PayPal to integrate it into X. It is essential to offer Xmail an autonomous and free platform while integrating it into an ecosystem, as is the case with Gmail and its Workplace or Outlook and its Microsoft 365.

The integration of the social network also represented an important stage of the project. Indeed, X already offers sharing of publications, videos, articles, and even video calls in private messages. And that’s without counting the integration of artificial intelligence. It remains to be seen whether anti-monopoly regulations and opposition from policy makers will pose too many obstacles.
