An employee does not click “Yes” in an email and is fired as a result. Now a government agency in Ireland says that was wrong. Now Elon Musk and Twitter must pay the employee 550,000 euros.
What kind of email is it? In November 2022, a month after acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk sent an email to all of the company’s employees.
The email, with the subject line “A Fork in the Road,” told Twitter employees at the time that they should expect “extremely hard work,” including “long, high-intensity hours.”
Musk gave his employees the opportunity to click on a link in the email that read, “If you’re sure you want to be part of the new Twitter,” and gave them 24 hours to either agree to the commitment by clicking on the link or refuse.
Those who did not click on the link were to be fired and given three months’ severance pay. This included the employee who now protested against this. The English magazine engadget.com reports this.
Long-time employee refuses to accept email
How did it end? The Irish Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ruled that a former senior executive at Twitter/X was unfairly dismissed. The WRC is an independent government agency in Ireland that inspects working conditions.
The former employee had strictly refused to agree to Musk’s email. The commission also ordered Elon Musk and X to pay the terminated employee 550,000 euros.
What did the WRC say about this? WRC Commissioner Michael MacNamee said in the ruling that the 24-hour deadline set by Musk was not a “reasonable period” for employees to consider the fate of their jobs.
Twitter’s HR department confirmed that the employee’s termination was indeed due to him not clicking on the email link. However, the employee apparently did not know that he was risking his job by doing so.
