Elon Musk bought hundreds of AirTags from Apple to monitor his servers – but he overlooked an important detail

Elon Musk wanted to use AirTags to monitor his servers. But he overlooked a restriction that Apple has placed on AirTags. Because he can only link a maximum number to his Apple ID.

What are AirTags? AirTags are small devices that can be located with an iPhone or other Apple devices: As soon as the devices are registered in the “Find My” network, you can locate the AirTag. It doesn’t matter where the AirTag is currently located. Some use the gadget to find lost luggage that the airline has thrown away.

With an Apple ID you can only use a limited number of AirTags

What does this have to do with Elon Musk? After buying Twitter, the well-known tech pioneer Elon Musk wanted to have the servers moved from one state to another state. Since the hardware is not exactly cheap and transport across national borders is not absolutely safe, according to the magazine br.ign.com, he bought the entire inventory of AirTags in an Apple Store so that he could use them to control his servers.

What’s the problem? The problem is that you can only manage a limited number of AirTags with an iPhone or an Apple ID: You can manage up to 32 devices. If you add another 13th device, there will be an error message, according to Apple.com. The devices include not only AirTags, but also other Apple devices, such as an iPhone or Airpods.

According to Walter Isaacson’s biography, personally authorized by Musk, he purchased hundreds of AirTags with the hope that he could use them to transport the servers. And a story where a car thief was caught because he overlooked an Apple device in the stolen car shows that the idea is not bad at all. Because all devices that are registered in Apple’s “Find My” network can be located.

Most people will probably never reach the limit of AirTags or the maximum number of devices in the network in everyday life anyway. It is unlikely that Apple will have granted an exception for Elon Musk.

The German YouTuber MegaLag has dared an interesting experiment. He equipped three packages with an AirTag and wanted to find out whether his packages really made it to North Korea. In a second video almost a year later, he also showed DHL’s reaction: A German YouTuber wants to send packages to North Korea – a small gadget shows him how DHL is tricking it
