[Mis à jour le 13 juin 2022 à 12h02] Is it the bitterness of having been eliminated in the first round of the legislative elections? No one knows, but Jean-Michel Blanquer announced on Monday June 13 that he filed a “legal appeal” on the ballot for the first round of legislative elections in the 4th constituency of Loiret, where he was a candidate for the presidential majority. Arriving third and with less than 12.5% of the votes of registered voters, the former Minister of Education did not qualify for the second round on June 19. A result synonymous with a cold shower for this loyal support of Emmanuel Macron and by extension for the presidential camp. But according to Jean-Michel Blanquer, the words and actions of his opponents towards him are not unrelated to his score. The day after the election results, he accuses his rivals of having violated several rules of the Electoral Code which governs the holding of elections. Among the facts denounced, he cites the sponsorship of Facebook posts and the imitation of some of his leaflets.

The ex-minister who has long canvassed to be a candidate in Ile-de-France was finally parachuted into the Loiret for the legislative elections and the campaign of the macronist was not easy in the face of sometimes unwelcoming voters and rivals invested in the battle and sometimes despite the rules according to Jean-Michel Blanquer.

What result for Jean-Michel Blanquer in the legislative elections?

Jean-Michel Blanquer was eliminated from the legislative elections in the first round, on the evening of June 12. The former Minister of Education volunteering to become a deputy, only came third in the 4th constituency of Loiret. By totaling 18.90% of the vote, Jean-Michel Blanquer bowed to the candidate of the National Rally, Thomas Ménager, who came first with 31.45% of the vote and that of Nupes, Bruno Nottin and his 19.43 %.

According to the political journalists and editorial writers of BFM TV, the score of the former minister would be due to the deterioration of his image from the second half of the five-year term. In the JDD, the director general of Ifop Frédéric Dabi, rather sees in this result the consequences or of the parachuting of the candidate or of his balance sheet to National Education. However, despite criticism and not always friendly receptions on the ground – the candidate was sprayed with whipped cream by two teachers during the last week of the campaign -, until the end of May Jean-Michel Blanquer seemed to have a chance of qualifying for the second round of legislative elections in the polls.

He said he was “ready to continue” alongside the re-elected president (comments made on Radio J on April 21), claiming to still have “many ideas for things to change”… But the new Prime Minister and the re-elected president decided otherwise. Among the 41 ministers and secretaries of the LREM team, a good ten have kept their place in government, sometimes with different portfolios. But Jean-Michel Blanquer was not one of the lucky ones, his recent health protocol in schools having greatly impacted his notoriety among the French, after a particularly turbulent five-year term on the educational level. With five years spent in the government of Emmanuel Macron, he had nevertheless become the longest-lived minister in this position. But tensions and controversies have accumulated under his mandate, in particular with the much criticized reform of the baccalaureate. His popularity has thus been tainted, making him no longer appear as an asset for Emmanuel Macron’s camp. If there was no question of asking him to retire from political life, this departure from rue Grenelle marks a blow for this former rector who has never held an elected position before. Obtaining this place in the Assembly is therefore a crucial issue for the political future of Jean-Michel Blanquer.
