It is now almost the anniversary of the bloody war in Ukraine and there is still no peace in sight. On the contrary, the war escalates with increased efforts from both sides.
-Now we have reached a weapon type that is more offensive, the tanks. The next request from Zelenskyj is fighter jets that will also be able to operate across borders and then it will be a question of Russia’s reaction to that and the risk that there will then be a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, says former foreign minister and diplomat Jan Eliason.
A diplomatic solution seems far away, yet it is what must be worked towards to end the war. But so far the parties have not been able to meet to discuss the conditions for peace. What would it take to bring about a diplomatic negotiation?
– The pressure from the international community will be significant because I think the world is starting to feel that the war has gone on for too long and that Putin has stolen the agenda from all of us and there are great risks that it will lead all the way to the nuclear weapons level, says Jan Eliason .
