Elias Pettersson’s fine gesture that means so much – now does the most admirable thing at home: “I want to give back”

Elias Pettersson spends the summer at home in Sweden.
Then he stands for a nice gesture to the club that shaped him.
– I want to give back, says the superstar.

Elias Pettersson continues to impress in the NHL. Since being drafted fifth overall by the Vancouver Canucks, it’s been up and down, especially for the team that has struggled to perform and make the playoffs. But last season, for the first time since 2020, the Canucks advanced past the regular season.

Nice gesture

It did stop against the Edmonton Oilers, who later made it all the way to the Stanley Cup final, but the Canucks are already considered one of the teams that can challenge for the title next season, and Elias Pettersson is a big reason for that. The Swede had a brilliant regular season, signed a new lucrative contract – but was then unrecognizable in the playoffs.

Many were disappointed with how few points Pettersson scored despite the Canucks playing well in the playoffs, but afterwards it emerged that Pettersson was playing with a lot of pain in his knee, something he had been dealing with since January. Pettersson does not need to have any surgery on the knee, but with rest he should be back in full health when the season starts again in October. As usual, Pettersson spends the summer at home in Sweden and Sundsvall, but this year he is doing something completely new.

“I want to give back”

For the first time ever, Pettersson is holding the “EP40 skills camp”, a hockey camp for young hockey players. The camp is held in Ånge, where Pettersson took his very first skates, and Pettersson has chosen to give away all the money he draws into the camp to Ånge, the team that shaped him.

– Mainly I want to give back to Ånge, all the money goes to them. But then I want to offer kids to come here and teach them. Things that we teach here are things that I have practiced every summer, he tells ST.

Elias Pettersson did not have high expectations for life as a “coach”, but believes that it has given him more flavor, and that it is something he would like to continue with in the coming years as well. He also believes he has seen some future stars at the camp.

– I absolutely think so, I think there are many who look good. Everyone eats and everyone listens. It’s the first time I get to act as a coach, if you can say so. I thought it would be hard, but I think it’s been great fun.
