Elephant calf crushed to death at zoo in Borås

“It is with a heavy heart that we can tell you that our female elephant Panzi calved early on Sunday morning, but her calf unfortunately died soon after birth.”

The zoo writes that they are not entirely sure what caused the death, but that the elephant calf may have been crushed while interacting with the other elephants.

“We are all sad that Panzi’s calf did not survive,” writes Borås Zoo.

“Very sad”

Johan Jönsson, zoologist at Borås zoo, tells more about the incident.

– Exactly what has happened is difficult for us to say. But in interaction with the rest of the group, the calf has been injured.

He says that newborn animals are never guaranteed to survive.

– It is always vulnerable when it comes to newborn animals and it is never a given that everything will go well. In that case it is not abnormal, but of course very sad that something like this happens, says Johan Jönsson.
