Elden Ring Nightreign: From Software announces a very strange game

Elden Ring Nightreign From Software announces a very strange game

If the evening of the Game Awards 2024 was full of surprises, very few players expected to discover a new Elden Ring. Called “Nightreign”, the latter emphasizes cooperation.

If you were not able to follow the Game Awards 2024 evening, know that the event was full of announcements. In addition to the awards given to the best video games of the year, several new titles were also revealed during the evening. The publisher From Software particularly made an impression by unveiling “Elden Ring Nightreign”, a new title in the Elden Ring saga with very strange characteristics.

A game designed around cooperation

First of all, Elden Ring Nightreign is not a new DLC for the Elden Ring game released last year. It is indeed a game in its own right and set in the world of Elden Ring.

Elden Ring Nightreign is a decidedly cooperative game that would require up to three players (although playing alone is also possible) to survive cycles of three days and three nights in a restricted chunk of an Elden Ring map. During these three days and three nights, players will be able to explore and challenge different monsters to improve their characters and become stronger in preparation for the final boss battle. The latter will be different depending on the part and the trailer has already revealed that some of them seem to come from games in the “Dark Souls” saga including “The Nameless King” from Dark Souls 3.

To do this, players will have the choice between several already established characters that they can improve as they play. Even if players don’t make it to the end of a cycle, they will still find relics to customize and improve their character for future games.

They rogueliked my Elden Ring?

Such game mechanics are reminiscent of a particular genre: roguelike. Particularly known for titles like “Hades” or “The Binding of Isaac”, this type of game encourages players to play multiple times to improve their character and continue to progress until they exhaust all the content of the title.

A very strange type of game for the world of Elden Ring, and more generally, the titles from the From Software studio which has rather accustomed us to the solitude of gigantic worlds rich in stories and difficulties.

However, the idea of a multiplayer Elden Ring does not seem to come out of nowhere. A few months ago, Hidetaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware, spoke about such a type of game which he described as an “interesting idea”.

Elden Ring Nighreign will be available on PC, new generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series) and old generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) during the course of 2025.
