Dahmer, You, Dexter and Co.: Many can’t get enough of serial killer stories. If you want to experience an original approach with a star cast, you should check out Amazon Prime Video. The Cell with Jennifer Lopez has been streaming there for a few days.

The Cell tells a serial killer story with an original twist

Psychologist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) uses a revolutionary method that allows her to see inside her patients’ minds through thoughts. Her experience in the field catches the eye of FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn), who makes an unusual request of her. Together with his team, he was able to bring down serial killer Carl Stargher (Vincent D’Onofrio). One of his latest victims is still in danger, but his condition does not allow for conventional interrogation. In a race against time, Catherine must delve into the psychopath’s confused world of thoughts in order to elicit his secret. What she finds there threatens to overwhelm her.

The Cell is one of a series of serial killer films that conquered the cinemas after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, such as the Psycho remake, …because they are there to be kissed or The Bone Hunter. With its original premise, the thriller, which was released in 2000, stands out from the competition.

Director Tarsem brings his unique style to the table

Spiced up with science fiction elements, the concept forms a playground for director Tarsem Singh (The Fall), who makes his debut here. Together with his team, he developed surreal visual worlds whose influences range from HR Giger to Damien Hirst. The result is spectacular visions of the subconscious, which are still unparalleled in the genre today – and which have often been implemented with a stylish set design and practical effects.

However, the film was not well received by critics. But anyone who expects more from the serial killer film than rainy cities and horribly battered bodies should definitely watch The Cell. Not least because of the disturbingly eccentric performance by Vincent D’Onofriowho is known to bite into any role, whether it’s a recruit in Full Metal Jacket or the Marvel villain Kingpin in Daredevil.
