Ovidio Guzman, the son of the famous Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed “El Chapo”, and the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ovidio Guzman, nicknamed “El Raton”, was captured in the operation carried out by the Mexican army in Culiacan and surrounding cities in the state of Sinaloa.
Chaos DOminates in CITIES
After Guzman’s capture, the streets in the country were mixed. While the members of the cartel terrorized many cities in the state of Sinaloa, especially Culiacan and Mazatlan, 7 policemen were injured so far in the violence that broke out in the country. While cartel members set cars and businesses on fire in cities, security forces clashed.
EDUCATION HAS BEEN INTERMEDIATE
Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya advised citizens not to leave their homes until the events are over, due to the operations carried out by the security forces and the violent reaction of the criminal groups.
Education was suspended across the state, while service was suspended in public institutions such as tax offices, the electoral agency, and banks.
CARTEL MEMBERS IN THE PRISON ALSO RISE
The capture of Guzman caused the cartel members imprisoned in Culiacan Prison to riot. Eyewitnesses stated that flames and smoke were rising from the prison and gunshots were heard.
Cristobal Castaneda, Minister of Public Safety of Sinaloa State, stated that the incident in Culiacan Prison was an attempt by prisoners to escape, and that the situation is now under control without any loss of life.
FLIGHTS SUSPENDED
At Culiacan Airport, it was reported that a plane belonging to Aeromexico Airlines opened fire just before takeoff. While the fire caused great panic among the passengers on the plane, Aeromexico Airline announced that the hydraulic systems of the plane were damaged and the flight was cancelled.
Upon the incident, Culiacan Airport management announced that all commercial and general aviation flights were suspended and the airport was closed to transportation. Flights at Mazatlan Airport were also suspended in a short time.
GUZMAN TRANSFERRED
After the Sinaloa Cartel leader Guzman was captured, he was transferred to the capital, Mexico City, on a military plane from Culiacan Airport. It was stated that Guzman was held in military barracks No. 1 in Mexico City.
Mexican Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodriguez said at a press conference that the government was working every day for the peace of the country, using the expressions “We did not come to win wars, we came to make peace”.

Speaking at the press conference after Minister Rodriguez, Mexican National Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval stated that the operation took place after 6 months of intelligence work and pointed out that the capture of Guzman was a major blow to the Sinaloa Cartel. Minister Sandoval also stated that the cartel blockade still continues at 19 points in the city of Culiacan and clashes continue.

Sinaloa Cartel leader Guzman was captured by Mexican federal security forces on October 17, 2019, but was released due to threats against the civilian population by armed members of the cartel.
EL CHAPO IS ARRESTED IN THE USA
The former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, El Chapo, was convicted in February 2019 of billions of dollars in drug trafficking and the murder of many people, and sentenced to life imprisonment and a $12.7 billion fine by the US court.
