There is no question that Wednesday is one of the most successful, influential and popular Netflix series of recent years. The story about the stoic and smart Addams daughter triggered a hype. But the biggest critic of the series is, of all people, Jenna Ortega herself. And her criticism is almost always right. In a podcast, Ortega explained how she personally flipped the failed first draft of the now-famous Wednesday dance.
Jenna Ortega on Wednesday Dance: “Why would she be okay with that?”
In the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard, Ortega spoke about the creation of the iconic sequence. This takes place at a ball at the Nevermore school. Wednesday attends the event rather involuntarily and feels visibly uncomfortable. (Buy Wednesday’s realistic ball gown*) Then she bursts out dancing – a moment that could quickly have seemed embarrassing. This is proven by the first version planned by the showrunners, which Ortega describes:
In the beginning there should be one flash mob be. She should start dancing and everyone should join in and dance with her.
Wednesday as some kind of entertainer? That sounds more Disney than Goth. Such a boisterous scene doesn’t suit the character. The actress felt it too:
And there I have one vetoed. Because, why would she agree to that? I said, ‘You either delete it or have someone KO Wednesday’ and then it’s done.
Jenna Ortega was then given responsibility for the dance scene. She managed the feat of creating a choreography that not only does the character justice, but also adds a new layer to it.

When is Wednesday season 2 coming?
Wednesday season 2 has now been confirmed by Netflix. However, it is not yet known when the shooting will start, from a possible one start date not to mention. The production of the series takes place in Romania, so it’s a bit more complicated. In addition, Jenna Ortega is in great demand. A start of Wednesday season 2 in autumn 2024, i.e. two years after season 1, currently seems realistic.
