Eight COVID patients in ICU: HN health unit

Eight COVID patients in ICU HN health unit

The Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit reported Friday 36 new cases of COVID-19, down from 41 the previous day.

The number of cases is believed to be even higher than many symptomatic people are unable to get a PCR test due to limited availability.

Currently, one more area resident has been hospitalized for a total of 18, while eight of those patients are in ICU, an increase of one from Thursday’s report.

Due to data lags of up to 48 hours, statistics from Wednesday, Feb. 2 indicates that in-patient capacity at hospitals in Hagersville, Simcoe and Dunnville remain at 101.2 per cent while ICU occupancy has risen to 120 per cent.

An outbreak at a congregate setting was declared over on Thursday, bringing the number of ongoing outbreaks in high risk settings to 19:

– Retirement homes, 5

– Long-term care homes, 4

– Farm, 1

– Non-COVID-19 outbreaks, 1

– Other congregate settings, 8

In terms of vaccinations, the HNHU has administered 196,134 doses of vaccine.

Area residents have obtained an additional 35,545 doses at sources outside the health unit’s jurisdiction.

While almost 80 per cent of Haldimand-Norfolk residents are fully vaccinated, it’s a different story for younger people.

The health unit reports that 29.46 per cent of those between the ages of 18 and 29 remain unvaccinated. For those ages 12 to 17 it’s 33 per cent.

Statistics for children ages 5 to 11 show that 15.22 per cent are fully vaccinated, 23.22 per cent are partially vaccinated, and 61.56 per cent are unvaccinated. Many children only became eligible for their second dose in late January.
