Educators at Brantford-Brant’s two school boards accounted for a lion’s share of about 2,600 local public sector workers on the so-called Sunshine List for 2023.

The Grand Erie District School Board has 1,065 employees on the list, up by two from 2022. Among those are 899 teachers, 72 principals, and 35 vice-principals earning an average salary of $107,355.

The total salary paid to GEDSB employees on the Sunshine List for 2023 amounted to $114,332,735.
The Sunshine List was created in 1996 as a result of Ontario’s Public Sector Disclosure Act.
Designed to ensure accountability to taxpayers, the list shows public sector employees earning an annual salary in excess of $100,000.
Top earners at the GEDSB include Joanna Roberto, director of education, $234,050; Jennifer Tozer, superintendent of human resources, $180,086; Lisa Munro, superintendent of education, $179,719; Liana Thompson, superintendent of education, $179,679; Rafal Wyszynski, superintendent of business services, $179,679; Kevin Graham, superintendent of education, $173,618; Julie White, superintendent of education, $173,465; Regan Vankerrebroeck, superintendent of education, $153,050; Peter Ashe, superintendent of education, $147,839; and Griffin Cobb, principal, $146,131.

Meantime, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School board rostered 447 employees on the list, up by two from the previous year. Among those are 212 elementary teachers, 175 secondary school teachers, 33 principals, and 10 vice-principals.
The payroll for Sunshine List employees at the board totaled $48,068,519 in 2023.
Topping the list at the BHNCDSB is Director of Education and Secretary Michael McDonald at $209,224. Secondary school teachers Carmen Davis ($190,565) and Katherine Deconinck ($183,674) hold the next highest-paid positions on the list.
“The list may report additional earnings for individuals as the result of instruction provided through tutoring programs, summer school classes, after-hours continuing education programs, or receiving deferred salary for canceled teacher-funded leaves,” explained Tracey Austin, manager of communications and community relations for the BHNCDSB.

Also on the Catholic board list are Philip Wilson, superintendent of education, $165,292; Lorrie Ann Temple, superintendent of education, $164,116; Kevin Greco, superintendent of education, $164,116; Scott Keys, superintendent of business and treasurer, $163,932; and Amy Pimental, principal – secondary, $143,396.
There were 4,576 names on the Sunshine List when it was created 28 years ago.
Today there are 300,570 on the list, more than 30,000 higher than last year.
Some consider the $100,000 threshold to be outdated; the equivalent today would be about $175,000.
