Swedish 15-year-olds lose big in the global knowledge measurement Pisa. Results have plummeted in maths and reading comprehension, and are back at the lowest level of ten years ago.
On Tuesday, starting at 12.15, Labor Market and Integration Minister Johan Pehrson and Education Minister Lotta Edholm will comment on the results at a press conference.
The results of Swedish ninth graders have fallen sharply in both mathematics and reading comprehension, compared to Pisa 2018. The average score in mathematics was 482 (–21 points compared to 2018) and in reading comprehension 487 (– 19 points).
The third area of knowledge, science, also shows a deterioration, but it is within the margin of error: 494 (–6 points).
Bottom level
Reading and mathematics results are now back at the worst level in the 21st century. The score falls to the level of 2012, and then there was talk of a Pisa shock. Sweden has lost almost all of the improved results after 2012, states the main responsible OECD in its international report.
Pisa is the world’s largest student study, with 81 participating countries/regions in 2022. Of these, Singapore has by far the best results. Japan is the best of the OECD countries, Estonia has the best result in Europe and Denmark and Finland the best in the Nordics.
Despite the loss, Sweden is still above the OECD average in all three subjects. This can be explained by the fact that the majority of other countries have also backed down since 2018.
