Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso confirmed on platform X that presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio has been assassinated.
– I am shocked by the murder. My condolences go out to his wife and daughters. For his memory, I promise you that the crime will not go unpunished, he writes on X.
In social media, images and clips are being spread that purportedly show people during the campaign wait taking cover and screaming while the sound of several shots is heard.
The 59-year-old politician Villavicencio was a member of Ecuador’s National Assembly. He is one of the eight candidates in the country’s presidential election to be held on August 20.
