Ecuadorians approve shutdown of iconic oil field in Amazon reserve

This election was less covered than the presidential and legislative elections, but Ecuadorians also voted on Sunday to end oil and mining exploitation in two of the most biodiverse areas on the planet: the Choco Andino, north of Quito , and especially Yasuni National Park, in the Amazon. The latter is home to 300 species of amphibians and reptiles, 400 species of mammals and 600 species of birds. A decision with transcendental consequences.
