Supposedly Comté is a cheese to favor when you want to lose weight… and it doesn’t make you gain weight. This is what we hear on social networks. Updated with our dietitian nutritionist.
You are one of the cheese lover who cannot can’t finish a meal without tasting a piece ? You like slide a slice of County between two pieces of bread as a snack? According to videos currently shared on social networks – including the famous TikTok – the County would make you lose weight and would be like this to favor when you want to lose weight. Developed with Émilie Demoly, dietitian nutritionist, micronutritionist and specialist in functional nutrition in Paris.
Its fat is “beneficial”…
The County is a raw milk pressed cheese cooked, produced exclusively in the mid-mountain regions of the Jura. THE cows of the Montbéliarde and Simmental breeds French are the only authorized to produce milk for its production. The County is carryingessential amino acids and mineral salts. “It contains vitamin A, phosphorus, zinc, copper, vitamin B2 and B12.” It’s a cheese without additives, without coloring and without lactose (this sugar, naturally present in milk, is transformed into lactic acid in mature cheeses). It has, on the other hand, the reputation of being fatty and salty. “Yet he is one of the least salty pressed cheeses (0.8 g/100 g on average), and its fat is beneficial” notes Émilie Demoly. “His lipidsnecessary for the body but without excess, are from good fats“, she continues. The County contains 34% fat but its fatty acids would not have no negative effects on cardiovascular risk. Some might even have anti-carcinogenic, antiatherogenic, anti-inflammatory properties and anti-diabetogenic.
…and poorly assimilated thanks to calcium
“The qualities saponifying of calcium contributes to the elimination of lipids” adds our interlocutor. In fact, Comté, as a “cooked pressed” cheese, is particularly rich in calcium (we recommend it for children, the elderly and pregnant and breastfeeding women). This calcium would form insoluble soaps in the small intestine which would eliminate part of the fat County, in the stools.
Studies have confirmed that calcium-rich cheeses such as pressed/hard cheeses increase the fecal excretion of fats contained in these cheeses. This is why we say that Comté can be consumed (reasonably) without making you gain weight. Its richness in protein (28g/100g on average) also gives it a good satiety effect. But that doesn’t mean it makes you lose weight. Do you see the difference ? “The County, we must not deprive ourselves of it, confirms the dietitian. It does not make you gain weight if his consumption stay moderate : 40g is a nice, good portion.“ It is good, for example, to consume 40 g of Comté in a nice plate of cooked and raw vegetables at lunch once a week, alternating with a little goat and/or sheep during the week. As part of a low-calorie dietwe minimize our consumption and we prefer it for breakfast or lunch, And especially not every day. In general, our interlocutor recalls that “it is not necessary especially not demonize foods in a diet. It’s all a question of quantity, quality and above all association.”
