Pretend freckles and drawings in exchange for candy can soon be replaced with something else for Easter.
Since the 1970s, the number of Easter announcements has gradually decreased, according to Tommy Kuusela, research archivist at the Institute for Languages and Folklore, ISOF.
– All traditions are changeable and that also applies here, and it has slowly decreased.
“Greater freedom to choose”
Tommy Kuusela tells us that people have been dressing up since way back in history. And he doesn’t think it will stop. Instead, the Easter charms are expected to disappear in favor of other figures.
– There are various new traditions coming in, Halloween for example, which many children and young people prefer over Easter bunnies. You get more freedom to choose what to dress up as, he says and continues:
– People will choose their favorite characters from popular culture. Being superheroes, comic book characters, computer game characters, or anything really. I think it attracts far more.
Yousef: “Don’t usually do that”
One of those who dissed the freckles is Wilmert.
Why?
– Because I do not want to.
And why don’t you want that?
– So that I can dress up for something else.
Nor is Yousef attracted by turning into an Easter bunny.
– I don’t usually do that, I just want to chill a bit at home, he says.
One who, however, will keep the tradition alive this year is Vilda.
– I think it’s fun to dress up. And it’s still Easter now, she says.
