The Meti Collaboration is an organization founded by Douglas Vakoch, a graduate in psychology and history of science, and which partly follows some of the paths of the Seti program, from Carl Sagan : its purpose is to raise awareness among the general public about the search for extraterrestrial civilizations by designing and sending messages to their destination. Based in San Fransisco, the Meti organization also contributes to the program of theOptical Seti. The Goonhilly station will begin by sending out a series of pulses with characteristics proving they are not of natural origin. Will follow impulses establishing a system of counting and then, the table of Mendeleev of the chemical elements and a coded description of atoms. One can also doubt the presence of ET so close to the Solar system but, if so, a return message would give us proof that the Milky Way and the observable cosmos are full of life, which would, of course, be philosophically very interesting information.

Extraterrestrials: a message sent in music

At the initiative of the Sónar festival in Barcelona, in collaboration with scientists and the Meti, messages have been sent to a planetary system 12.4 light years from Earth where orbit a potentially habitable super-Earth. Researchers warn of the risks involved in appealing to possible hostile extraterrestrials.
On November 16, the anniversary of the sending of the famous message fromArecibo43 years ago, towards the great cluster of hercules (M13), some 25,000 light-years from Earth, the Meti (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) international and its partners, the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia and the Sónar Festival (music and technologies) of Barcelona — which initiated the project –, announced that they had sent a message to GJ 273 b.
GJ 273 b is a super-Earth about three times more massive than our planet orbiting GJ 273, also called theLuyten’s stara red dwarf that shines in the constellation of the Little Dog. Located only 12.4 light-years from our Solar System, it is one of the potentially habitable exoplanets known closest to us. In other words, if this neighboring world (neighbor on a galactic scale!) is inhabited by civilizations able to decipher the message, we could receive an answer in just under 25 years, in 2042.
Three transmissions in binary code in two frequencies different radio stations were broadcast on October 16, 17 and 18 with the Eiscat’s 32-metre-diameter antenna (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) near Tromsø, Norway. The result of a collaboration of artists and scientists, the messages of “Sonar Calling GJ 273b” include, in addition to greetings, tutorials » mathematics and 33 musical compositions signed among others by Autechre, Jean-Miche Jarre, Matmos, Kode9, Laurent Garnier… Expected arrival date in the “receivers” of GJ 273 b, November 3, 2030! Should we try to communicate with extraterrestrials or not?
