After the end of The Walking Dead is far from over. The horror franchise is in a new era where the zombie saga continues with new spin-off stories. After New York became the new location for Negan and Maggie, the next offshoot is already starting in the USA this week.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon transports Norman Reedus as grumpy survivor Daryl to a whole new setting – France. Before the US start at AMC, the first reviews have now been published. And they are surprisingly positive.
Daryl Dixon’s The Walking Dead return has received mostly positive reviews
Daryl Dixon is already the 5th (!) spin-off, which spawned the TWD universe in 13 years. The story takes place after The Walking Dead finale and begins with a radical new beginning for Daryl, who awakens in a completely alien world. But don’t worry if you’ve given up on the parent series at some point. Like The Walking Dead: Dead City, this spin-off builds an all-new story that brings back a familiar character but also works for newcomers.
But is Daryl Dixon any good? “Epic and entertaining” enthuses Comicbook and even draws thematic and aesthetic comparisons to Children of Men and The Road. Bamsmackpow’s review describes the spin-off as “bigger, badder and better“. On X, critic David Opie also draws a positive conclusion, describing the Daryl series as “the best The Walking Dead has had in years.”

“Not a groundbreaking TV series, but a wonderful and different new chapter“, Sportskeeda describes the spin-off, which according to Covered Geely with the “most terrifying zombies yet” trumps. AV Club, on the other hand, sums up devastatingly: “confusing trash“.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon inspires with new zombies, exciting characters and fantastic landscapes
What The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon can score with is the new setting. “A breathtaking spectaclewrites Michael Patterson of Bamsmackpow. For the first time, the franchise explores the zombie apocalypse outside of the United States, using French landscapes and settings – from the coast of Marseille to the catacombs beneath Paris – to convey a new sense of grandeur.
Another novelty that The Walking Dead fans have been looking forward to for some time is new variants of the undead, which the previous spin-off Dead City still missed. Among other things, with the “Burners” we get to see a new zombie species that, thanks to a mutation, can burn people with their acidic blood.

Daryl Dixon found a new group
The characters and performers deserve a lot of praise of the new TWD spin-off. In addition to deeper insights into the psyche and past trauma of fan favorite Daryl Dixon, Harry Potter star Clémence Poésy also shines as the second main character. “Both are similar performers, brooding and quiet but warm by nature, making it easy to appreciate their partnership and them as individuals, despite their occasionally scathing or selfish moments.“, writes Gamesradar.
Daryl Dixon is compared to The Last of Us but is not a clone
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is often compared to the HBO hit The Last of Us. Because at first glance, the two post-apocalyptic series share some similarities. Here it is Daryl who is supposed to escort the chosen boy Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) to a mysterious place across France for the Union de I’Espoir religious community and the nun Isabelle (Poésy).
Laurent is a child prodigy because he was once born of a pregnant zombie (!). At the mysterious place called The Nest, he is supposed to ascend to the new messiah who could lead mankind into a new age. Thankfully, Daryl Dixon isn’t a The Last of Us clone. The Wrap gives the all-clear: “If you look beneath the surface, you’ll find major differences between the two shows” and describes the series as “surprisingly beautiful, stirring and captivating“.
religion and belief are – especially for the character Daryl Dixon – unexpected central themes of the new The Walking Dead series, which stages both the background of Daryl’s France trip and the dark past of the nun Isabelle as great mysteries.
When does The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon start in Germany?
The Walking Dead: Dead City launches in the United States September 10, 2023 at AMC. The first season consists of six episodes that air weekly. One second season is already in production and will bring back another familiar The Walking Dead face.
German fans have to be patient a little longer. In this country, the Daryl series probably in December on Magenta TV to start. But first there is the Negan Maggie spin-off to see, which celebrates its German premiere on October 13, 2023 on Magenta TV.
