    E.Coli: a potentially deadly bacterium

    The E.Coli bacterium, which has already been talked about recently in the Buitoni affair, can cause gastroenteritis within three days of consumption marked by abdominal pain and diarrhea (possibly accompanied by blood), with or without fever.

    In case of symptoms, a medical consultation is necessary.

    “People who have consumed the products mentioned above and who present this type of symptom are invited to consult their doctor without delay, informing him of this consumption and the nature of the contaminating germ”say the authorities.

    Most patients recover in less than ten days. However, some people may see their condition worsen (acute renal failure, haemolytic anemia, epileptic crisis, stroke, thrombocytopenia – drop in platelets, etc.).

    Pregnant women, the elderly and young children, with weakened immune systems, are most at risk of developing life-threatening complications.

    Some simple everyday reflexes can prevent a serious infection:

    • Cook the minced meat well (it should no longer be pink);
    • Never thaw at room temperature;
    • Avoid raw milk and raw milk cheeses (especially in young children);
    • Wash hands before each meal;
    • Wash vegetables, fruits and aromatic herbs;
    • The work surface and utensils must be thoroughly washed;
    • Cooked meals and leftovers should be sufficiently reheated and consumed quickly;
    • Raw foods should not be stored near cooked foods.
