Public Health France has opened an investigation following the multiplication of contaminations with the bacterium Escherichia coli in several children.

Health authorities are launching an investigation following the death of a child contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria. According to Public Health France, 13 cases of contamination with hemolytic and uremic syndrome (HUS) and serious infection with Escherichia coli almost everywhere in France.

These cases were detected in New Aquitaine (5 cases), Hauts-de-France (3 cases), Ile-de-France (3 cases), Brittany (1 case) and Pays de la Loire (1 case). The sick children are aged 1 to 15 and presented symptoms between 01/18/2022 and 02/11/2022.

    An infectious disease

HUS is a rare infectious disease that is in most cases foodborne and is frequently caused by E.coli bacteria.

Common symptoms of infection with this bacterium are diarrhea often with blood, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting.

    Prevent HUS

Public Health France specifies that two categories of food are particularly sensitive: minced meat and products made from raw milk. To avoid any contamination, it is advisable to observe good hygiene in the kitchen: wash your hands, wash fruits and vegetables well or consume cooked meals and leftover food quickly.
