Dwayne Johnson’s endlessly entertaining reinvention of a fantasy classic

Dwayne Johnson is entertainment. Whether it’s breakneck Fast & Furious performances or the cinema adventure Jungle Cruise, the action star is a guarantee for lots of fun. In this category of films, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ranks among the best. It is a fast-paced, brightly coloured, never boring attack on the funny bone. It’s on TV tonight.

On TV: Action star Dwayne Johnson’s Jumanji guarantees fun until the last second

A reimagining of the Robin Williams classic Jumanji, Johnson’s action extravaganza tells a similar story. A group of teenagers around Spencer (Alex Wolff) and Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) gets drawn into a video game and equipped there with new avatars. Surrounded by the lush green of a jungle level, they must retrieve a precious jewel. That was cheated by Fiesling Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale).

The body swapping premise alone is terrifically entertaining here. While sports cannon Fridge finds himself in the body of the short backpacker Mouse (Kevin Hart), the self-declared nerd Spencer becomes the muscular superhero Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson). Selfie queen Bethany (Madison Iseman) becomes squat academic Professor Oberon (Jack Black). The consequence is screaming. A chronically terrified The Rock and a ranting Jack Black make every fan laugh.

The dramaturgy is practically the perfect framework for this constant fun. There are clear goals (retrieve the jewel), a clear villain (Van Pelt), a great danger (everyone only has three lives) and increasingly adventurous levels, which are presented in brightly colored, beautiful pictures. Everything is aligned Johnson, Hart, Black and Karen Gillan to deliver a playground full of hilarious situations.

That works brilliantly. So did many viewers, who made the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level possible for the action-fun with the box-office success (via Boxofficemojo). And as the debut shows today on TV, enough entertainment for a third big screen adventure.

When will the fantasy remake Jumanji – Welcome to the Jungle be on TV?

Jumanji is running today at 8.15 p.m. on RTL. If you don’t have time, you can catch up on the film at midnight. The jungle adventure was directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher).

Podcast about the Dwayne Johnson phenomenon: pain in the ass or popular figure? Dwayne Johnson is everywhere right now. He stars alongside Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds in Red Notice, the most expensive Netflix film to date. He also has his own series about his life with Young Rock, which can be seen in Germany on Sky. As usual, he presents himself cautiously as the presidential candidate of the future.
