The Freedom Party piloted by Geert Wilders is known for its strict stances against immigration, Islam and the EU.
Chairman of the right-wing populist Freedom Party (PVV) in the Netherlands Geert Wilders announced on Wednesday that he will not become the country’s prime minister because he does not have enough support behind him.
– I could only become prime minister if all parties in the coalition support it. This was not the case, Wilders wrote in the message service X.
The Freedom Party led by Wilders unexpectedly won the Dutch parliamentary elections in the fall. The party is known for its strict stances against immigration, Islam and the EU. For example, the party program calls for mosques and the Koran to be declared illegal and a referendum on EU membership.
On Wednesday, Wilders said in X that he wanted a right-wing government and less asylum and immigration.
– The love for my country and my voters is greater and more important than my own position, Wilders added in X.
The clock is ticking to find the Prime Minister, because the outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte has a strong military alliance as the next Secretary General of NATO.
