In the fight against climate change, the city of Haarlem, west of Amsterdam, has banned virtually all advertising of meat products.

– We cannot talk about the climate crisis and at the same time encourage people to buy products that are one of the causes of it, says Ziggy Klazes from the environmental party GroenLinks.

She is one of those in the city council who voted through the local law, which bans the advertising of all meat that is not organic or comes from small-scale farms.

– For my part, I believe that includes advertising for fast food chains, says Klazes.

– We will be the first city in the Netherlands, and in Europe and indeed the whole world to ban advertising for “bad” meat, she continues.

The ban will take effect from 2024, if it is not stopped.

The municipal council already decided on the ban in November last year, without anyone outside the chamber noting this. Not until Klazes last week notified advertising agencies of the decision did the news spread, which caused bad blood.

– Banning ads for political reasons borders on dictatorship, says Joey Rademaker from the right-wing party BVNL
