Duplantis, just like the other 12 finalists in Budapest, chose to jump at the entrance height of 5.55, where the blue-yellow star, as expected, flew high over the bar.
Then a substantial increase to 5.75 awaited – but Duplantis stood above that height.
It therefore took more than three quarters before it was time for the 23-year-old to jump again in the sticky August heat. When the bar was at 5.85, “Mondo” impressed again. Duplantis had a large margin to the bar at a height where many of the competitors started to have problems.
After 5.85, there were only six jumpers left in the final. In that situation, Duplantis chose to stand over the next height, 5.90.
The pole vault final is underway.
