Dune Project Loses Lead Actress and More

Dune 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the sci-fi highlight of 2021, hits cinemas this year. In addition to the sequel, the vast universe from Frank Herbert’s novel is also to be expanded outside of the cinema. A series for Warner’s streaming service HBO Max is also planned. But Dune: The Sisterhood now has one severe production setback suffered.

Dune series loses director and leading actress

So far, director Johan Renck, who directed the first two episodes, and actress Shirley Henderson have been engaged as leading actresses alongside other stars such as Vikings actor Travis Fimmel for the Dune series. However, according to Deadline, Renck and Henderson are now dropped out of the project.

The lead role of Henderson’s character Tula Harkonnen must now be filled again. Additionally, Diane Ademu-John, who wrote the pilot episode, has stepped down as co-showrunner.

According to an HBO Max spokesman, Renck has already finished filming the first two episodes. The Changes behind the scenes should now contribute to delivering the best possible series. Nevertheless, the current developments around the sci-fi project sound like problems at first.

Deadline reportedly learned that Renck’s look as director of the Dune series deviates too much from Denis Vileneuve’s style from the cinema films and is said to have caused differences. It is not yet clear how much this behind-the-scenes change will delay the launch of Dune: The Sisterhood. Actually, the series should appear in 2023.
