Decidedly, the universe of Frank Herbert has the wind in its sails. Dune Awakening, Funcom’s crazy project, is clarified in a trailer finally telling us about its gameplay and its beta.

An impression given to us by its new trailer, unveiled at the Game Awards 2022, which showed us for the first time some gameplay sequences of this game announced as a massively multiplayer open-world survival game. Titles that make it a major project, with the ambition to shake up the hibernation of the MMO genre. And we’re not going to complain about it. If the images of the trailer above did not necessarily bring us much in terms of gameplay, the official site of Dune Awakening offers us a brief dive into the ambition of this Funcom project. The game is defined as an open-world, massively multiplayer survival game, and the studio defines the player experience as follows:
“Rise from survival to domination in a vast and desolate Arrakis shared by thousands of other players. Dune Awakening combines the difficulty and creativity of a survival game with the social and interactive potential of a massively multiplayer to create the first open-world survival MMO.“
The world of Arrakis will of course be an essential element of the gameplay, offering an environment both beautiful and merciless, where dunes and canyons hide both dangers and immeasurable riches. The gameplay leans towards third-person combat, mixing both small skirmishes and large-scale battles where you will have the opportunity to fight on foot, in vehicles and in the air. A number of weapons, vehicles and gadgets will be at your disposal as well as different combat techniques and abilities. Extremely ambitious claims that would almost make us fear a disappointing launch.
Announced once again during the Game Awards 2022, Dune Awakening will be preceded by a beta period, which will undoubtedly be essential for the proper functioning of this ambitious open-world MMO. This test period can be joined by all players provided they register on this page. The game will be available on PC via Steam, but also on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. An output condemned by its ambition to be only available on next-gen platforms. According to Funcom, this beta should arrive current 2023.
