Dune 3 has to compete against 10 billion franchise

Coke vs Pepsi, Xbox vs PlayStation… Dune vs Star Wars? This sci-fi movie battle could be upon us in as little as two years if we read the signs correctly.

What is already certain: Disney has announced three Star Wars films for the next few years. One of them will be released on December 18, 2026 in the USA. Warner has now also set this date for Denis Villeneuve’s next film. Apparently, this is Dune 3 aka Dune: Messiah.

Dune versus Star Wars at the box office: Will the ultimate sci-fi duel take place in 2026?

As the Hollywood Reporter reports, an “event film” by Denis Villeneuve is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Although the director has various projects in the pipeline (including a nuclear war film), many insiders assume that this is Dune 3. Deadline also names the conclusion of the Dune trilogy as the likely candidate for Villeneuve’s event film.

Will moviegoers then prioritize Star Wars as usual? Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens is, after all, in sixth place among the most financially successful films of all time. Or is the New Kwisatz Haderach on the Block more interesting now? In 2024, Dune: Part Two will be the most successful live-action film to date.

Dune and Star Wars: What’s in the future?

In the case of Dune 3, Frank Herbert’s sequel novel will be adapted The Lord of Dunewhich has so far only been made into a series. This is of course being tackled by Villeneuve again, but for him this will be the last Dune film.

Star Wars is a little more mysterious. Rumor has it that there will be a sequel to the last trilogy – and that Daisy Ridley will return as Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct.
