Greig Fraser is probably the most sought-after cinematographer in Hollywood right now. Even if the name doesn’t mean anything to you, you’ve definitely seen his pictures. Fraser was involved in Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One and The Creator, among others. He is also one of the pioneers behind the volume technology that brings The Mandalorian to life.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, his name appears in the credits of Dune and The Batman. And that is exactly what is now leading to a conflict. Both Dune 3 and The Batman 2 are scheduled to film next year. It looks like Fraser only has room for one of the two blockbusters in his schedule.

Dune 3 needs to find a replacement for Greig Fraser – and has already found a very exciting name

Is Fraser returning for The Batman 2 or Dune 3? This question has been hotly debated in recent weeks. As per the newsletter from usually reliable scooper Jeff Sneider, Fraser will next delve into the gritty world of Gotham City and film the second big screen adventure of Robert Pattinson’s Batman. Dune 3, meanwhile, is eyeing another cinematographer for the return to Arrakis: Linus Sandgren.

Sandgren is a exciting replacement. Although he doesn’t yet have as striking a profile as Fraser, he has amazed people with several outstanding films in the past decade. These primarily include his collaborations with director Damien Chazelle: La La Land (!), Departure to the Moon (!!) and Babylon (!!!).

Sandgren is also behind one of the best looking blockbuster of the decade: James Bond 007 – No Time to Die. No matter whether it’s a haunting close-up, a furious action sequence or a breathtaking view of the landscape: Sandgren’s images definitely don’t need to hide from Fraser’s atmospheric shots.
