The lives and work of famous musicians have been popular material for films and series for decades. This year Bob Marley: One Love has already reached us on the big screen, while currently the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black can be seen in cinemas.
Anyone who is now eagerly waiting for supplies can look forward to a real highlight in the near future. Because with A Completely Unknown A biopic about music legend Bob Dylan is already in the works. The main role is played by none other than Dune 2 mega star Timothée Chalamet.
A Complete Unknown: Timothée Chalamet becomes Bob Dylan
This means that Timothée Chalamet is stepping into high-profile shoes. Todd Haynes (Carol) took on the Bob Dylan myth in 2007 and filmed individual facets of the music legend’s life in I’m Not There with seven different actors – including Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett and Richard Gere.
For Logan director’s approach James Mangold Chalamet will now be the only Dylan to be seen and will focus on his rise as a musician in New York City in the early 1960s. However, Chalamet puts in a lot of effort and even appears in the film even heard as Dylan be. The Wonka star trained extensively in advance with the singing team that brought Austin Butler to peak vocal performance for Elvis. The first set recordings were published via Indie Wire, among others:

In search of his great role model Woody Gurthie, Dylan ended up in New York City in 1961 at the age of 19. He is becoming more and more popular in the world Folk scene of the metropolis and can soon secure a contract with Columbia Records through appearances in small clubs. Be Advancement as a musician eventually brings him to international fame, which is put to the test when he decides to turn his back on the folk genre and a rockier direction to hit.
James Mangold got Bob Dylan’s blessing for A Complete Unknown
James Mangold co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York) and adapted the novel Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald* from 2015 as a basis. On the podcast Happy Sad Confused! Mangold explained that the film therefore focuses on a specific moment in Dylan’s story rather than his entire life:
I think the best films that are based on a true life are never told from the cradle to the grave, but rather about a specific moment.

That’s exactly the reason why Bob Dylan himself gave Mangold’s project his blessing. The director sat down with the music legend over several days and talked about the script for A Complete Unknown:
I have had several wonderful days in the company of [Bob Dylan] spent and talked to him alone. The script was personally commented on by him and valued by me. He loves films. When we first sat down, he started off by saying, ‘I love Cop Land.’ Timothée Chalamet isn’t the only star of A Complete Unknown
The Dune 2 star receives support in front of the camera from no less well-known cast. Among others, Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning (Super 8) as Sylvie Russo, Edward Norton (Fight Club) as Pete Seeger, Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation) as Alan Lomax, PJ Byrne ( The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harold Leventhal and Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) as Johnny Cash in A Complete Unknown.
After filming on the biopic had to be postponed due to the Hollywood strikes last year, it began in New Jersey in mid-March 2024. A Complete Unknown is supposed to be, after all 2025 come to the cinemas.
