Edward Berger has proven himself to be a German prodigy in Hollywood in recent years. With the war film Nothing New in the West, the director won four of the coveted golden boys at the Oscars in 2023 and has not been able to escape international offers since then. While his latest film Konklave can currently be admired on the big screen, Berger is already in the starting blocks with several future projects.
One of them is supposed to bring him together with Dune 2 star Austin Butler and a action-packed sci-fi hit become.

As Deadline exclusively reports, Berger will direct the film The Barrier stage, which is currently hotly traded on the Hollywood bidding market. The Konklave director has hired Austin Butler as the lead actor, who caused a stir this year as the villain Feyd-Rautha in Dune 2 and was seen in Jeff Nichols’ biker gang drama The Bikeriders.
While exact details about the film’s plot are still being kept under wraps, the film is said to deal with the theme of time travel and as “Interstellar meets Top Gun” be described. The Barrier adapts the short story by MacMillan Hedges, who will also write the screenplay for the feature-length film.
When will The Barrier by Edward Berger be released in cinemas?
Since the film is still in the early stages of production, it is unlikely to be released not before 2026 to be expected. Berger’s other upcoming projects include the series Hellhole with Robert Downey Jr., the crime film Rio with Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch and the mystery thriller The Ballad of a Small Player with Colin Firth and Tilda Swinton.
