Zookeeper Shoshana Pijnenburg from the Hoenderdaell Zoo in North Holland, where Remy has been staying since he was found, looks at the now adult lion with a lump in her throat. “I think he knows something is about to happen,” she says. Pijnenburg and her colleagues have been practicing with a transport box for some time now. “We put a piece of meat in it and then Remy goes into the cage automatically. This way he gets used to the cage. When the time comes next week and he is transported, he will be used to the cage and he doesn’t have to to be anesthetized.”
