    In Ouagadougou, at the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital, caregivers had to face an unusual situation. A 17-year-old young man suffering from dengue fever had a strange symptom. Which ? An erection for 18 hours, reports L’Indépendant.

    Severe dengue

    Victim of severe dengue fever, the student was hospitalized for five days in the urology department of the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital Center. “For approximately 18 hours, he had a mild, non-painful and persistent erection, which occurred spontaneously without any sexual stimulation, without any notion of trauma or any triggering factor motivating the healthcare team to seek urological advice”, explain the doctors on sciencedirect.com. The situation returned to normal after 48 hours. “Detumescence was achieved completely after 48 hours without after-effects. The patient was seen again at 3 months then at 6 months and expressed no complaints”they add.

    This is an unprecedented case for the medical team. Until now, no link had ever been established between arterial priapism (prolonged erection) and dengue fever. According to the urofrance.org website, “Priapism is a penile erection, persisting for more than 4 hours, without any sexual stimulation”.
