Dricus Du Plessis hit hard at UFC 290 in Las Vegas, on the night of Saturday July 8 to Sunday July 9. The South African has simply given himself one of the very best middleweight fighters in the American league. He did not tremble against New Zealander Robert Whittaker (number 2 in the category).

Thanks to an excellent jab in the second round, Du Plessis first stunned his opponent, before chasing him into the cage and chaining heavy strikes to force the referee to stop the fight. All under the eyes of Israel Adesanya, the Nigerian middleweight champion.

Upcoming title fight

After this excellent result, the native of Pretoria brings his record to 20 victories for only two defeats. Note that he has not come out of the cage with a defeat since October 2018. A regularity which resulted in the hanging of a big name on his hunting board this weekend. What he needed to turn a corner is now done.

Because more than a resounding victory, the South African has obtained the virtual certainty of becoming the next challenger for the belt in the category. Hostilities over, Adesanya has also climbed into the octagon to face the one who will surely be the next to try to steal his title. For several months, tension has been rising between the two men and their duel, if it takes place, promises to be explosive.
