The three friends saved the life of a three-year-old boy who was lying lifeless in the water.
Today they were recognized for their heroic efforts.
– When we picked up the child, he did not react, says Majid Alshurafa, one of the boys.
It was on May 17 at 17:30 that Angered’s fire station received an alarm about a drowning at Lake Surtesjön. A three-year-old boy had been found lifeless in the water by three boys, friends Osman, Mohammed and Majid.
The friends had just encountered a father looking for his son, when they spotted some shoes at the water’s edge.
– I was scared myself. I didn’t know what to do because when we picked up the child he didn’t react, says Majid Alshurafa.
The wait for the ambulance: “Feel like two hours”
They called 112 and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy, while the ambulance and emergency services were on their way.
– It took exactly seven minutes. But for me it felt like two hours, says Majid Alshurafa.
The boy was able to be taken to hospital and according to Osman, Mohammed and Majid he was doing well. After a few days he was able to return to preschool.
Praised by the rescue service
On Tuesday, Osman, Mohammed and Majid were praised by emergency services for their quick action, which ultimately saved the boy’s life. They received flowers, diplomas and lots of praise.
– For us, Osman, Mohammed and Majid are real everyday heroes. When many would get scared and run away, they instead step forward and make a real heroic effort. They save this little boy’s life. Their actions show how you can make a difference when an accident occurs, says Lars Klevensparr, union director at the Greater Gothenburg Rescue Service.
And the rescue service is now urging more people to do like Osman, Mohammed and Majid and intervene if they see someone in need.
– It’s the first time I stand and talk to television. But I try to do my best. I think that I have done something good, I must be proud of myself, says Majid Alshurafa.
