93,000 salmon on the run in Norway
Norwegian salmon seem to have become increasingly prone to escape. In 2024, more than 93,000 individuals escaped from farms in the country – the highest figure for several years.
In total, salmon escaped on at least 27 occasions during 2024. The largest single incident occurred at a facility in the county of Nordland – a mass escape that included 65,000 salmon.
According to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, the fish escape mainly in connection with handling, and cause problems not only for the individual fish farms. Escaped farmed salmon are considered a threat to the red-listed wild salmon population, and the industry is working towards a zero vision.
This year’s figures are still preliminary, but pale in comparison to the peak year of 2019 when over 286,000 salmon escaped their farms, according to Norwegian business newspaper E24.
