Quite a few companies have self-driving cars on the streets of the United States, but only on a test basis. Cruise can now offer a standard taxi service – completely without a human driver.
The company has about 30 copies of the electric car Bolt in San Francisco. The condition has its limitations: It only applies to certain times of the day, and not in bad weather such as thick fog or heavy rain.
But Cruise Manager Gil West calls it a milestone for the entire industry.
Already during the test phase, unexpected situations have arisen. Earlier this year, San Francisco police stopped a cruise car driving without a light in the evening. Amateur movies from the moment show how the patrol goes to the stopped car, only to realize that it is empty.
The company has commented on the incident that the car lawfully stopped for inspection, and that the problem was rectified without any fines being issued.
