A driver, who pleaded guilty to causing the death of a Port Dover neuropsychologist, has been sentenced to house arrest for two years less a day.
Originally charged with criminal negligence causing death, Jamie Montour, 39, of Ohsweken pleaded guilty in Ontario Court last month to operation causing death. Several charges of breach of probation in 2016 and 2017 were withdrawn.
Justice Gethin Edward also prohibited Montour from driving for the next 10 years.
Court was told that Montour, on Jan. 6, 2021, took a vehicle without permission and caused a two-vehicle crash at Cockshutt and Campbell roads in Brant County.
Ivan Kiss, 69, was injured in the crash and died on Jan. 24.
Montour was arrested on Feb. 13.
She will be allowed to go to work and to leave her home on Saturday afternoons to shop and run errands.
An obituary described Kiss as “an accomplished and respected neuropsychologist and scientist,” who “made a significant contribution in his field and beyond, committing long, enthusiastic hours to his profession.”
