Dreams was meant to be one of the most revolutionary games on PlayStation – now it’s dying without a murmur

In Dreams, players should be able to create their own games on the PlayStation. After 3 years, the developers will stop supporting it in 2023.

What kind of game is this? Dreams is a game by Media Molecule that was released exclusively for PlayStation in February 2020.

Dreams is about accessing a kit of different tools and then creating your own game and then sharing it with other players in an online library.

Accordingly, Dreams is characterized by two basic gameplay aspects:

  • creating your own creations
  • finding and playing other players’ creations
  • Develop your own games on the PlayStation? This was a revolutionary concept for consoles. But the desired success did not appear.

The support is gone, but the creations remain

What’s next for Dreams? The developers of Dreams announced on April 11, 2023 that there will be no more events and updates for the game. Media Molecule will officially end support on September 1, 2023.

However, after September 1st you will still be able to create your own creations, share them with others or access creations made (via indreams.me).

Are there similar games? Yes, the popular Free2Play title “Roblox” follows a similar principle as Dreams. You can create different levels and games and share them with other players.

In addition, Dreams recently had a new competitor in the “genre” in Fortnite, of all things. There, players can also create their own games, maps or modes with the “Unreal Editor for Fortnite” published in March 2023 and make them available to other players.

Players can then find your creations with a code in Fortnite and then play them. However, Epic Games prohibits works that infringe the copyright of other games. For example, you are not allowed to recreate maps from Call of Duty.
