Call of Duty: Warzone’s house blessing is lopsided after Activision Blizzard rolled out two special skin bundles: one belongs to Twitch streamer Nickmercs, the other to YouTuber TimTheTatman. But after a controversy over a demonstration, both skins are now no longer in CoD Warzone and the streamer DrDisrespect is deleting the game.
This is the situation:
DrDisrespect criticizes Activision Blizzard: “Pathetic”
That was DrDisrespect’s reaction: YouTube streamer DrDisrespect has been very upset with Activision Blizzard’s treatment of Nickmercs. He called the behavior “pathetic”.
According to DrDisrespect, he will no longer play Call of Duty until Activision publicly apologizes to Nickmercs and reintroduces the skin bundle:
This is a difficult number. Why was he treated like this again? So what I’m going to do now, what we’re going to do is – number one – uninstall the game. Don’t get me wrong, the 2023 Call of Duty is the worst of the bunch, but that decision goes to the Call of Duty PR team.
Jake Luckey shows and contextualises DrDisresepct’s statement:
TimTheTatman shows solidarity with his friend Nickmercs
How does TimTheTatman react? TimTheTatman also immediately showed solidarity with Nickmercs.
He wrote to Call of Duty (via twitter):
Nickmercs has been my friend for years, we came to CoD together with our operators. It feels wrong to me to have my skin bundle when he doesn’t have his anymore. As a support for my friend, please remove the TimTheTatman bundle from the game.
The YouTube streamer emphasized in a stream that he loves Nickmercs (via twitter) and spoke to him for 30 minutes about the incident. He doesn’t think Nickmercs meant to offend anyone with his comment.
CoD Warzone then removed TimTheTatman’s skin bundle from the store and pointed out that this was done at the request of TimTheTatman.
Nickmercs only writes 10 words, leaving plenty of room for interpretation
What is the scandal about?? Apparently there is a misunderstanding here because Nickmercs was very vague in his virtual demonstration tweet.
Nickmercs’ original statement, “You should leave the little children alone,” was taken by many to mean that “you” meant members of the LGBTQ community and that Nickmercs was accusing them of molesting children.
This is an accusation that is common in the United States against members of the LGBTQ community and that tends towards “hate speech”.
When he said “you” Nickmercs meant the school and teachers.
He later explained on a Twitch stream that he was a new father and didn’t want teachers to talk to his kids about LGBTQ, but he and his wife wanted to do it.
He later added on Twitch that that was his opinion, he stood by it and he didn’t apologize for it.
It’s not clear if Activision Blizzard took the statement the way Nickmercs meant it, or how some first interpreted it on Twitter.
These are the two skin bundles in question:
Just the protest of the “good boy”, TimTheTatman, hurts Activision Blizzard
This is behind it: This is a difficult situation for Activision Blizzard. Actually, such “company shows a clear edge” campaigns are supported by fans.
But here you have obviously misunderstood a misleading statement and now have 3 of the biggest streamers about the game and their huge community against you.
People also accuse Activision Blizzard of behaving hypocritically: The company is accused of “sitting on the moral high horse”, while it came out in the course of the sexism scandal that Activision Blizzard itself has a lot of dirt on it. So Activision Blizzard is denied judging others so harshly.
TimTheTatman in particular is considered a “clean, friendly” streamer who has an impeccable reputation and is not at all controversial. These are actually the people that Call of Duty has enjoyed promoting and working with in the past.
It is noteworthy that here TimTheTatman shows solidarity with his friend and seeks a conflict with one of the biggest gaming publishers. DrDisrespect, on the other hand, seems to have gotten through all the companies, who risks little with his protest.
