DRC: fighting is getting tougher around Goma, in North Kivu

Conflict in eastern DRC concern of the international community MONUSCO

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the security situation was still tense this Saturday, January 25, in the surroundings of Goma, provincial capital of North Kivu. For several days, fighting has pitted the Congolese army and its allies against the M23 group, supported by Rwanda. Thirteen soldiers – South African, Malawian and Uruguayan – deployed within the SADC regional force or within the UN mission (MONUSCO), were killed in the fighting, the authorities of the three countries announced on Saturday. President Félix Tshisekedi held a Defense Council on Friday January 24 where he asked his military leaders to “repel the aggressor, far from Goma”.
