Ecuador’s conservative president is opposed to a challenger from the left of the country’s presidential election.
In the first round of election, both sitting President Daniel Noboa and left -wing candidate Luisa González receive just over 44 percent of the vote, but Noboa marginally more.
Before supporters in the capital Quito, 47-year-old González describes the result as “a draw” in the statistical sense-and a victory in itself, because much indicated that Noboa would get at least 50 percent and win the election directly.
The electoral movement has been characterized by a spiral of violence where large drug cartels want to control smuggling roads through Ecuador. For 15 months in power, Daniel Noboa has announced a state of emergency and placed military in the streets.
The election will be decided in a duel round in April.
