Things couldn’t be going better for Kevin Costner at the moment. A few days ago, his new film Horizon premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was received with thunderous applause. The western epic forms the Start of a four-part sagawhich Costner plans to bring to theaters in the coming years.

But wait, Western, there was something? That’s right: the Costner renaissance began with the western series Yellowstone, which he left for his ambitious Horizon project – and that shortly before the end! Now many fans are wondering what will happen to the main character he played for several years, John Dutton.

In an interview with GQ, Costner goes into more detail about his Yellowstone exit and also reveals what solution he offered series creator Taylor Sheridan to write his character out of the series.

Regarding his exit, Costner says:

We have very rarely [mit den Dreharbeiten] started when we said we would, and we didn’t stop when we said we would… That was fine with me, really. I was okay with it, but it was not a trend that could continue for me.

Starting with the corona pandemic, through the months-long double strike in Hollywood (screenwriters and actors) to scheduling problems, which in turn resulted from the previous two factors: The production of Yellowstone was canceled in the past interrupted for various reasons.

Eventually, Costner approached Sheridan’s team with the following offer:

And then at some point they said to me that we have no end or something. I said: ‘Well, if you [John Dutton] wanted to kill, if you want to do something like that. I have a week before I [mit Horizon] start. I’ll do whatever you want. When does the Yellowstone finale start? Is Kevin Costner returning? And what happens to John Dutton?

How the Yellowstone story will end for John Dutton remains unclear. On Monday, Paramount announced that filming has begun on the second half of Season 5. Costner’s involvement was not mentioned at all. The star himself was recently open about his return. If this actually happens, it will probably result in a cameo in the finale.

The second half of Yellowstone’s 5th season will consist of six episodes in total and will be released in… November 2024 on Paramount Network.
