The alarm came to SOS just before lunch on Wednesday.
– One person managed to raise the alarm himself and told them that he was in distress. Anders Fjällström tells SVT that he was frozen.
Then the mountain rescuers started a systematic investigation together with the police.
Minus 35 degrees during the rescue
Although the temperatures were down to minus 35 degrees, the other conditions were favorable for a quick and successful rescue.
– It was clear and there was no precipitation, tracks were clearly visible, says Anders Fjällström.
The operation with a total of eight mountain rescuers went completely according to plan and after just over four hours, in the last twilight, they find the frozen man east of Lake Tärnasjön, awake and talking.
– It was as successful as it could be in the middle of the accident. But there are no margins when it’s so cold, says the mountain rescuer.
The mountain rescuers are praised by the police
The man is transported by scooter towards Tärnaby, later he is flown by ambulance to Norrland University Hospital.
The police are now praising the efforts of the mountain rescuers in the extreme cold.
– They drop everything and go out in over 30 degrees below zero. People do not understand what a self-sacrificing social contribution they are making. We are completely dependent on them in a situation like this Simon Wormö, who was the police officer on duty during the operation, to VK.
According to him, the man’s fingers were frozen deep and he had no blood circulation down to the wrist.
– Had the mountain rescuers not found him, he would not have survived, they have saved this man’s life, he says to VK.
Your own safety is prioritized
Even though the temperatures were record low during the operation, the mountain rescuers did not hesitate to go out to save the man’s life.
– We are followed and do not go alone, says Anders Fjällström, but at the same time urges to think one more lap before mountain adventure in these extreme conditions.
– You get frustrated that people haven’t thought about it, he says.
