Finland’s relays went under the bench in the EC team championships in athletics. Finland was 11th in the final results, while Sweden came out on top with a difference of half a point.
Finland’s career in the EC team championships in athletics ended bitterly. Finland fought closely with Sweden for tenth place, which would have been the best Finnish performance in history.
Before running the 4×400 meter medley relay as the final event, Finland was 3.5 points ahead of Sweden. The teams progressed in the relay at a steady pace until the last change, until Sweden ran the third leg Emil Johansson accidentally struggled the Finnish anchor Mette Baasin after changing the hood.
Baas was left lying on the ground for a while, and at the same time Sweden Moa Grenades managed to get away. In the end, Sweden was 12th in the mixed relay and got five points, thanks to which it moved up to tenth place by half a point over Finland, which came last. Half a point is the smallest possible difference in the games.
11th place is still Finland’s best ranking in the EC team championships.
