In our Dragon Ball: The Breakers review content, we touch on the dynamics of the full version of the game, which we looked at in beta before.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers review: The game is a game designed to bring to life the genre of survival from the killer, which we have seen before, such as Dead By Daylight, Friday 13th and Evil Dead: The Game, in a way suitable for anime fans.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers review / PC
Let’s examine together how well Dragon Ball: The Breakers, which we played as civilians trying to escape from the famous villains of the Dragon Ball series, was good, how compatible the formula was with the anime, and whether it managed to be a game that we would play for a long time and not get bored.
KAMEHAMEHA!
Even if you haven’t watched the Dragon Ball series, you must have seen characters like Son Goku, Vegeta or Krillin. Forget all those characters, this game has weaker people in the lead role. The characters we are talking about are not strong in their own class like Yamcha, they are civilians with no fighting skills or strength. When people living their daily lives are suddenly attacked by powerful enemies, they try to survive by cooperating with other civilians and repel the aggressor if possible.
If you’ve ever followed the Dragon Ball series, you know that the concept of time travel is nothing new. There are alternative time zones here, too, and villains that should not normally exist threaten these time zones. The villains called Raider consist of Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu, which we also know from the series. Those who try to survive are the civilian characters we created and the weak side characters of the series such as Bulma.
There are three different options you can do to survive, depending on how strong the Raider is and how prone to teamwork you are. Go around finding the switches that will activate the various devices, and then turn on the device that will eventually fix the time distortion. One of the options is to counter the Raider and possibly neutralize it with the energy cubes and dragon balls we found while walking around. Finally, in case the device fails, we have a chance to board the escape pod and leave the realm.
The game actually has a fun system. We have to survive with a weak gun and minor abilities against an extremely strong and flying enemy. Our goal is to activate devices that will correct the distortion in time. The abilities we have and the gadgets we find around are the kind that give us time to escape rather than stop the bad guys. There’s a hook to dodge away, a trampoline that launches high, or rockets that do little damage to the enemy. Of course, there are some special abilities you can get for Dragon Change, depending on the character you choose. I’ll talk about that later.
Trying to survive against the Raider is actually fun, we hope that our character will hide in a suitable place and pass by without seeing us with our character whose heartbeat is accelerating. If we chose Oolong as civilian, we can disguise him as an object and hope he doesn’t see us, or we can stun him for a short time with Bulma. It makes the feeling of helplessness against the Raider and the excitement of escape very good.
However, it is possible to fall into enemy hands due to poor character controls or the camera’s inability to catch up with the character. It’s very common for me to make a great escape plan when the Raider is very close, but find myself in an unrelated place due to the camera’s inability to track it properly, and the Raider getting on top of me.
We are not completely defenseless against extremely powerful villains, with a power called Dragon Change, our character gets stronger and can fight Raider for a short time. For this, we collect the energy cubes we collect from the environment and we can have the powers of the heroes by using the Dragon Change, which has 3 different levels. It is possible to use the special abilities of the hero we have chosen here, but do not think that you can stop him alone. Even if the levels are equal, you are facing a much stronger enemy and the transformation can only be used for a short time. Then you have to wait to use it again.
Dragon Change is a nice feature, but considering how good the camera is even as a simple civilian, you can imagine what it does while flying through the air chasing the enemy. One-on-one fights are usually done by randomly pressing the attack and escape buttons, hoping that they stumble upon the opponent. Unless you bring all the dragon balls together and transform into level 4, it is not possible to take on the Raider alone, besides, the weak combat system loses its effectiveness when the attacks are added to the fact that the attacks are a bit of luck. If you can’t attack as a team, you use the transformation to escape.
over 9000
So far, we’ve always talked about weak civilian gameplay, but let’s look at the other side, the Raider class, where we control the villains of the series. We have 3 different characters that we can start with their first form and transform into their perfect form, Frieza, Cell and Buu. Even though each character’s attack pattern and abilities are different, their goal is the same, killing all civilians.
As a raider, you go around and destroy buildings, you try to find civilians and kill them without activating the machine. Meanwhile, it is also possible to strengthen the character and bring it to the next level by capturing and killing various NPC civilians. When you kill one of the players and evolve, you also have the ability to eliminate part of the map and kill everyone in it.
Playing as a Raider is like playing with a civilian who has always opened Dragon Change, you can fly as you wish and look for your victim, leaving no stone unturned. You have an invincible character as long as the players against you don’t get stronger quickly and make joint attacks. However, the problems continue due to the weak combat system and the camera moving according to its head. I really wanted to play Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 or FighterZ whenever I got into a fight in the game.
I would like to tell more about the Raider, I would like to talk about the abilities of each character, what he can do, but it is very difficult to be a Raider in the game. Even if you choose the preferred character as the Raider, you enter a random game and you almost never become a Raider. I don’t expect to be a Raider all the time in a game played with a total of 8 people, but if I haven’t been a Raider for 3.5 hours, it means there is a problem with this system.
If I hadn’t played the beta before, I would have almost no idea about the Raider characters. Almost all of my time in the game (I spent about 10 hours) was against the Raiders as a civilian. I had the chance to become a Raider twice, in one of which a team came that killed me until I figured out how to play the character. In the other, I played knowing what to do as my hand got used to it, and I managed to enjoy it.
It bothered me a little that there are only 3 Raiders in the game and there is not much difference except for some abilities. I wish I could comment more, but as I said, I didn’t play enough of the Raider side to comment much.
Dragon Gacha Balls
Dragon Ball: The Breakers is not a free game, it is a game that is on sale worldwide for $ 30, and the sales price in our country is 300 TL, at least it is still like this if the exchange rate has not been updated. There are 3 different maps in it, but they have no change other than visuality. In addition to creating your own character, you can play with Bulma and Oolong skins. If you level 50 of the Season Pass, which comes for free, you also earn the farmer that appears in most of the series as a skin.
There is also a gacha system in the game. The gacha system, which is one of the favorite systems of mobile games in the far east, well known with Genshin Impact in our country, is a system about winning one of the things in a certain pool at random. Do you want your character to use a special ability and outfit for Vegeta in the form of Dragon Change, you just enter the shop and try your luck. Yamcha has arrived or not, try the press money again. You have options to spend the money you earn by playing the game here or to improve your skills. You can use your credit card if you want to develop skills and drop characters.
I don’t find the gacha system annoying, in mobile games it pushes the player to play more and maybe pay, but after all, we are playing a free game, we don’t have to pay any extra money unless it is very necessary. When we give money to the game, my thoughts change as “I paid 30 dollars for this game, why am I paying extra for a 3-star Yamcha set”. The number of players is already known, there is no cross-play, there is no cross-region, it takes a long time to find a match, on top of that, why do I play games of chance for skills that I can use for a short time?
We also have a shop that sells things that we can use to customize character outfits and some animations. We can also buy the products here with in-game money or premium currency (which is polite to say credit card). Of course, everything you say “that’s very nice” can still be purchased with premium currency. I’m tired of this kind of stuff in games, it’s a big minus to pay money and also pay for their content. It can be said that “There is a Battle Pass, it gives free premium money”, but it is a part that requires a lot of grind and even that money is low.
The game is all about luck, good teammates will come, you will find the items you are looking for by chance and the opponent will play well, then you have a really fun and challenging match. In reality, either the opponent is very bad (because he has been playing survivor for probably 10 hours) or your teammates decide to attack the enemy with 1 level Dragon Change instead of giving the last dragon ball to you and make no plans.
Conclusion
If Dragon Ball: The Breakers came as an F2P game and promised what it offers now, I would say “at least it’s free, you won’t regret it if you try it”. Even if you haven’t watched the anime, it is possible that there will be matches that you can enjoy because the gameplay is fun. But this is not the performance I expect from the game I will pay 30 dollars or 300 TL. There is not even a proper tutorial in the game, you try and learn most things during the game, there is not even time to understand whether the falling character skill is good or bad!
I played it on PC without any problems, I had fun in the matches we played as a team, although I like the visual style as an anime lover, I didn’t like that the maps were empty. As a Dragon Ball lover, I got bored of the game after a while. If they fill it with future content updates and offer more options, I’ll come back and play, but playing for 10 hours was enough for me. With a large group of friends, it can be a very fun game that anyone can play brawling, but it’s debatable whether it’s worth $30 for even that.
If you like Dragon BallIf you don’t mind paying 300 TL for the game and more for the characters you want, I can recommend this game. I have a hard time recommending the game to other people, even at a discount, because I can already see that the player base will be low. If we could at least play with other consoles, it might not have been made because of cross-region lag, but it should have been cross-play.
