Dozens of civilians fleeing east killed in Kramatorsk train station strike

Moscow denies being at the origin of the shootings, the European Union strongly condemns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounces a “ evil without limit after the rocket attack this Friday morning April 8 on Kramatorsk station, in eastern Ukraine. An attack that left at least 39 dead and a hundred injured. A balance sheet that could still increase.

With our special correspondents on the road to Kramatorsk, Mary Normand and Julien Boileau

The death toll could rise further as the two rockets fell on Kramatorsk station in the middle of the morning, when many people had already gathered inside and around this station in the hope of catching a train. expected in a few hours to evacuate the city.

This crowd has been observed for several days now: women and children, especially in the station of this Donbass city which is located today about 60 km south of the front and whose Russian forces are gradually approaching .

In the city right now, there is panic, a resident told us a few minutes ago; everyone is looking for a way to evacuate by road now, but there is hardly any more gasoline in the service stations, it takes several hours to wait for a few liters. And then the roads to the West, to Dnipro in particular, the big city in the West, are extremely congested.

Monster traffic jams

We see buses with evacuation signs, a few tractors that farmers want to put in safety and above all very laden individual cars, many of which have a small white sheet taped to the windshield indicating the presence of children in the vehicle. .

We also observe the passage of many troop transport vehicles in the direction of Kramatorsk, while it is rather fluid in the other direction; there is normally a four-hour drive between these two towns, it takes at least twice as much now and this rush to the West should of course increase in the hours to come after these bombardments on the center of Kramatorsk.
