Dortmund had everything in their own hands when the last round of the Bundesliga got under way. Victory against Mainz at home and first league title in eleven years secured.
But it turned out to be something completely different.
Within 25 minutes, Mainz led 2–0 – in parallel, Bayern Munich had taken the lead in their match. In addition, Dortmund had managed a penalty miss signed by Sébastien Haller.
Club legend Marco Reus was substituted into the first, 18-year-old super talent Youssoufa Moukoko came into the second, but it did little to help.
Dortmund certainly pulled one back in the 70th minute and then equalized in the 96th, but the points were not enough and the title went to Bayern Munich, who beat Cologne 2–1. Jamal Musiala became a great match hero when he decided in the 89th minute of the match.
Both teams thus finished on 71 points after 34 games – but Bayern won the title thanks to better goal difference – the club’s eleventh in a row.
Bayern Munich otherwise headed for a fiasco season since the coaching change in April. Julian Nagelsmann got the kick and in came Thomas Tuchel. Since then, the results have been anything but optimal and the league title was therefore a must – not least for Tuchel himself.
